Diverse staffing is a powerful tool for success, for many reasons. Our students look to us not only for knowledge, but for validation, sense of purpose, and self-worth. When a student never sees anyone who looks like them in a position to impart wisdom, lead, or protect, it sends a negative message to their self-worth. Some of our students will have a hard time believing they can achieve their dreams if they never witness an example of success before them in the classroom. Quality teachers of diverse backgrounds who have made their dreams come true by joining the most noble profession of education, instill encouragement to all students, not just to those who share their heritage or culture.
When students have positive interactions with teachers from diverse backgrounds the students gain an appreciation (not only for what the teacher has shared) but for who they are, a lesson that imparts compassion for others. This lesson goes a long way towards maturing our students as citizens in Frederick County and the world. As a member of the Board of Education, I would work with FCPS to increase the recruitment of diverse teachers by actively supporting teacher/mentor opportunities with universities who have an established record of diverse candidates and provide support services to these educators to ensure retention.
